Northern Ireland vs Germany Euro 2020 qualifier match preview

Northern Ireland have enjoyed a perfect start to qualifying after beating Belarus and Estonia twice to record four wins from four, and top the group with 12 points. Michael O’Neill’s side come into their first meeting with Germany in this qualifying campaign on the back of a 1-0 friendly win over Luxembourg .

O’Neill named an experimental side on Thursday with three U21 internationals making their debuts, but is expected to call upon more experience tonight as they take on Germany. Hearts of Midlothian striker Conor Washington could be handed a start replacing Kyle Lafferty or Josh Magennis, while the likes of Leicester City’s Jonny Evans and Southampton’s Steven Davis will be key for the Northern Irish side.

The Green and White Army have maximum points after beating both Estonia ad Belarus home and away, and their remaining four games are all against Germany or Netherlands starting with this one.

Serge Gnabry will be looking to add to his impressive tally of eight goals in nine international appearances after scoring the opener against the Dutch.

Germany will be without Illkay Gündogan after the midfielder went down with a cold. Borussia Dortmund full-back Nico Schulz will miss out after picking up a foot injury against the Netherlands – RB Leipzig’s Marcel Halstenberg is expected to replace him. Löw is expected to switch to a four-man defence, with Joshua Kimmich remaining in midfield.
