La Liga ‘Will Start Again’ on 20 June

May 8, 2020

Leganes manager Javier Aguirre has claimed that La Liga’s 2019/20 season will return on 20 June after Spain’s top flight was postponed until further notice back in March.

The Premier League and Serie A are hoping to complete their seasons once it is deemed safe to do so, and La Liga are aiming to do likewise . The Bundesliga has already confirmed a 16 May return date.

Aguirre revealed to Marca Claro in Mexico that he’d been informed by La Liga that the season will be completed over a five-week period beginning on 20 June.

“We’ve now got a restart date: La Liga will start again on June 20 and we’ll officially finish within five weeks, on July 26, [Matches] will be played Saturday, Sundays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for the 11 fixtures. La Liga have now confirmed that to me officially and so I’m happy, because we’ve now got training all scheduled. We’ll start tomorrow. Fortunately, we passed our [coronavirus] tests,” Aguirre said.

The matches will be played on just two days of the week (Wednesday and Sunday) should the spreading of the coronavirus ease up.

They also add that some new rule proposals will be implemented, including clubs being allowed to make five substitutions per match – which will be done as two double changes and one single substitution to avoid time wasting.

Should teams begin training this week, then all 20 sides will have about six weeks to achieve match fitness before the return date. We’ve already seen the likes of Real Madrid return to training, with strict measures being put in place to do so in the safest way possible.

However, there are some concerns already as five players in the Spanish leagues have tested positive for coronavirus following initial tests are in La Liga, with two more in the second division.

What’s more worrying is that it is expected this number will rise, possibly to 30, as only a handful of clubs have received the results of their tests so far. More than 2,000 tests are being done for club staff, coaches and players of all 20 top flight clubs, as well as more in the second tier.
