TikTok is a video app where people can share short clips of up to 15 -60 seconds. It’s full of people doing lip syncs, dances, tricks and various other things that have the potential to go viral. 

TikTok took fourth place in the list of most downloaded iPhone apps than Facebook, Messenger, Gmail, and Netflix.

TikTok was the second most downloaded app in the world, and has benefited from a late surge in Q4, taking to from 4th to 2nd position. TikTok garnered 738M downloads across iOS and Android.

TikTok’s support has grown in most Asian countries and is particularly loved in Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

TikTok finally took the coveted #1 position in the Google Play Store in the USA, with 2.78 million downloads.

TikTok downloads have been made to Android devices except in the USA, where there are more iOS users. The vast majority of India’s 190.6 million TikTok fans use the Android version of the app.

TikTok’s user base are young, with 25.8% aged between 18 and 24. A further 24.5% are aged 25-34.

As TikTok has soared to fame, it has had to grapple with a number of contentious issues. 

Last November, the U.S. government launched a national security review of ByteDance’s acquisition of Musical.ly. The U.S. government is said to be concerned that the Chinese company may be censoring politically sensitive content and worried about how user data is stored.
