Bayern Munich travel to RB Leipzig tonight in what is arguably the top matchup of the weekend in European soccer. A battle of No. 1 versus No. 2 with Leipzig in first, though Bayern dropped to third following Wolfsburg’s 1-1 draw with Fortuna Dusseldorf.
Bundesliga: Bayern vs. Leipzig
- Date: Saturday, Sept. 14
- Time: 7:30 p.m. EAT
- Location: Red Bull Arena (Leipzig)
Bayern: The giants are coming off two straight wins with 11 goals in three games the best mark in Germany so far. But Leipzig is the only team to win its opening three games and has conceded a league-best two times.
Leipzig: Leipzig creativity in attack has been superb, and Timo Werner is on fire with his recent hat trick. This team must defend the set pieces well, as a player like Phillipe Coutinho could give them a ton of trouble.
Bayern Munich will be without Leon Goretzka for the game who had to undergo surgery for a thigh bruise and will be out for some time. While that’s only one missing player (that we know of), Goretzka’s absence will surely be felt by the team.
Robert Lewandowski, Kingsley Coman, and Serge Gnabry, supported by Thomas Muller. Philippe Coutinho did return late from international duty and South Americans are generally rested following long trips out of Europe, so he’s unlikely to start.
If Muller plays this evening, will he be deployed as a second striker playing behind Lewandowski or as a right central midfielder (like he has been playing so far this season)? This positioning will directly affect the two others Kovac chooses in midfield most likely to be Thiago Alcantara and Corentin Tolisso.
David Alaba at left back, a central defensive duo of Lucas Hernandez and Niklas Sule, and Joshua Kimmich at right back.
