June 14, 2020

Atletico Madrid will be looking to return to the top four when they resume their 2019-20 La Liga campaign away to Athletic Bilbao.

Diego Simeone‘s side are currently sixth in the table, one point off fourth-placed Real Sociedad, while Bilbao occupy 10th with 37 points.

Team sheets for the early KO in Spain:

Athletic Bilbao XI: Simon, Capa, Yeray, Martinez, Yuri Berchiche, D. Garcia, Lopez, Muniain, Williams, Cordoba, R. Garcia.

Atlético Madrid XI: Oblak, Trippier, Gimenez, Savic, Lodi, Llorente, Partey, Koke, Saul, Carrasco, Costa.

Diego Costa payed tribute to Virginia Torrecilla – a midfielder for their women’s team – who had surgery for a brain tumour.

He celebrated equalizing in a draw with Athletic Bilbao by holding a shirt with Torrecilla’s name and number after she had a successful operation to remove a brain tumour in May.

Bilbao captain Iker Muniain had opened the scoring in the 37th minute only for Costa to level two minutes later.

This was Atletico’s first match since knocking holders Liverpool out of the Champions League at Anfield on 11 March. They remain sixth in the table but are now level on points with Real Sociedad, who sit fourth and in the final Champions League qualifying spot.

La Liga resumed after being suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic, Atletico were denied all three points when Bilbao keeper Unai Simon produced a fine late save to keep out Santiago Arias.

Bilbao, face leaders Barcelona away on 23 June and second-placed Real Madrid at home on 5 July, remain 10th in the table.
